Art has been a constant presence in my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was captivated by the beauty and realism found in illustrated books and paintings. I still remember seeing Botticelli’s Birth of Venus projected onto a classroom screen and feeling a sense of wonder that stayed with me. Years later, as a teenager, I discovered a Sotheby’s catalogue and carefully cut out reproductions of John Singer Sargent’s paintings to keep in my sketchbook — long before I knew who he was or where that fascination would lead me.
I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, in 2003. During my studies, I became increasingly drawn to the timeless qualities of representational art. I therefore pursued an education in classical realism at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where I studied from 2004–2008. The Academy’s dedication to observation, craftsmanship, and the traditions of the old masters deeply resonated with my own artistic interests.
My own work is rooted in a love of classical realism, with a particular focus on portraiture, the human figure, and still life. I am endlessly fascinated by the challenge of translating life, emotion, atmosphere, and beauty into paint. The process is often slow and demanding, but it is precisely this dedication to careful observation and craftsmanship that makes painting such a meaningful pursuit.
Beyond technique, I believe art has the ability to elevate our experience of being human. Whether through painting, music, literature, architecture, or film, great works of art can offer moments of reflection, inspiration, comfort, and connection.
In 2018, I began sharing my experience through online art education, allowing me to connect with artists around the world. In addition I continue my studio practice while teaching students through online courses and in-person workshops internationally.
I look forward to sharing my passion for painting and the joy of the creative process with you.
