Who is Dr Ben Furman and What is Kids'Skills?

Ben Furman, MD

Ben Furman, MD

World-renowned psychiatrist, family therapist, author and leading expert in solution-focused psychology

I am a medical doctor and psychiatrist with a special interest in child and family therapy. While specializing in psychiatry in the 1980s, I discovered solution-focused psychology and became passionate about it. It's an optimistic and forward-looking approach to helping people overcome psychological challenges.

One day, several years ago, I was approached by two special education teachers who had become attracted to the solution-focused approach. They asked me if I would like to collaborate with them in developing a method based on solution-focused psychology for helping children overcome difficulties. Our teamwork over several years led to the development of a method called “Kids’Skills”.

Kids'Skills is based on the idea that the best way to help children overcome any kind of hiccups or challenges, is to stop focusing on problems and difficulties and to talk instead about skills that children need to learn or improve. This shift from trying to get children to overcome problems to helping children develop skills is a true gamechanger. Children don't like to talk about problems, but they like to learn skills - particularly if they can learn skills in a creative way and they are supported by the people who are important to them.

Kids'Skills has become increasingly popular around the world. I have personally been teaching it over the years in over 40 countries and literature about the approach is currently available in more than 20 languages.

If you want to find out more about me and my work, you can visit my websites www.benfurman.com or the Kids'Skills website at www.kidsskills.org

This method truly helps children overcome difficulties without focusing on the problems, but rather by emphasizing their strengths and resources. I am sincerely grateful to Ben Furman for creating the Kids'Skills method and to the team in my country that taught it to me.

I have learned from the children that I have worked with that Kids'Skills does not only help children change, it is also helps the adults around the child to change.

I have been teaching Kids’Skills for many years for parents, caregivers, and teachers. In my view the method is highly suitable for helping children tackle any kind of behavioral difficulties. I like the method very much and I use it all the time. It always seems to lead to some positive changes not only in children but also in parents, which is important as it provides sustainability for their children’s achievements.

Together with my colleagues I have helped a number of schools, kindergartens, and children's homes around the country to adopt Kids'Skills as their primary psychological method of problem solving. A large quantity of parents has participated in various activities and discussion groups sharing stories of their successful use of the method.

I think the “Kids’ Skills for Parents" program is useful for everyone—not only for young children but also for college students, and even in interactions with colleagues and other adults. It makes people feel more relaxed and free from stress.
