I'm a biopsychologist and I've spent 20+ years studying one question: why do capable, intelligent people lose access to their best thinking exactly when the stakes are highest?

I've seen it in nearly 20,000 university students.

The person who knew the material blanked on the exam. The candidate who prepared perfectly froze in the interview. The athlete who dominated in practice choked when it counted. Smart people, shutting down at the worst possible moment.

The answer is not a mindset problem.

When your brain reads a situation as a threat, your amygdala fires and your prefrontal cortex goes offline. You literally lose the part of your brain that thinks clearly. No amount of willpower changes that. The biology has to come first.
