Learn to Forage Safely and Confidently

8 min • Identify a Wild Allium
Gathered helps you build a careful, evidence-led approach to identifying plants, mushrooms, and trees in the places you explore. You’ll practise observation, photography, comparison, habitat awareness, and safety checks — so wild finds are understood before they’re ever picked, prepared, or eaten.

You crushed your goal of confidently identifying 5 wild edible mushrooms this month.
Learn to notice the broader clues that help you investigate plants, trees, mushrooms, berries, nuts, and fruit before making an identification.
Build skill through observation, comparison, photography, and reflection, so careful identification becomes a stronger habit.
Follow guided checks for uncertainty, toxicity, protected species, and moments when the safest choice is to leave a find alone.
Gathered brings together region-aware guidance, daily practice, careful photo evidence, field journalling, book-supported cross-referencing, lookalike awareness, and confidence checks — helping you build the judgement to forage more safely, thoughtfully, and independently over time.

Gathered adapts to your region, so the learning feels relevant whether you’re in the UK, Europe, North America, or elsewhere in the world.
Whether you have woods, forests, and hedgerows, a garden, or just a local walking route, Gathered helps you learn from what’s around you.
Follow a steady process for each find: notice the habitat, study the key features, take useful photos, compare lookalikes, cross-check with trusted books, and only then decide what to do next.
Learn and practise how to photograph the details that matter — habitat, leaves, stems, gills, bark, season, and multiple angles — instead of relying on one quick picture.
Gathered reinforces the need for trusted field guides and books and definitive cross-checking, so you learn how to investigate rather than blindly trust an app.
Record photos, habitat, key features, lookalikes, confidence, and next steps for each find — so every walk becomes evidence you can learn from over time.
Gathered surfaces built-in safety guidance to help you make more informed choices when a find may be toxic, unsafe, or best left firmly in the do-not-eat category.
Reflect on what you know, what still needs confirming, and when a find should stay firmly in the do-not-eat category.
Track field journal entries, confident identifications, do-not-eat decisions, and the growth of your foraging judgement over time.
Gathered isn’t another ID app. It teaches you to build the skills, evidence, and confidence to identify wild finds for yourself.
Explore key plant, tree, and mushroom families, including species spotlight videos from Arthur and Sybbie.
Learn how to involve children safely and thoughtfully — encouraging curiosity, observation, respect for nature, and the habit of checking before touching, picking, or tasting.

Renowned foraging expert, author and creator of The Grizzly Forager, empowering thousands to safely identify wild edible foods.
My journey into foraging began as childhood curiosity: wandering woods and hedgerows, fascinated by the edible treasures hidden in plain sight. Over time, that curiosity became a lifelong passion and a career spent helping nature-loving families and curious foragers learn how to identify wild foods more safely and confidently.
As The Grizzly Forager, an author and educator, I’ve learned that real foraging confidence doesn’t come from being handed quick answers. It comes from knowing how to observe carefully, compare evidence, ask better questions, recognise uncertainty, and decide when something should be left alone.
That’s why I created Gathered. It brings my safety-first, evidence-led approach into your pocket, guiding you through the same habits that I teach in the field and to my own children: noticing habitat, photographing useful details, checking lookalikes, using trusted books, and building a field journal you can learn from over time.
My hope is that Gathered helps every walk become more curious, careful, and rewarding — so you can build the judgement and independence to forage safely for years to come.
Gathered adapts to your experience, your local environment, and the finds you’re learning from — helping you slow down, observe properly, check your evidence, and build safer foraging judgement over time.
